Dim Sum and then Some

21 April 2010

My good friend and fellow foodie blogger  Kristi , signed us up for cooking classes at Hipcooks, here in West LA. We chose Dim Sum from their large variety of classes available because it sounded like the most challenging since we were both clueless on where to  start with all these flavors! Since then, we’d anxiously been looking forward to stuffing our faces with wontons, dumplings, pork puff pastries and more! We had a TON of fun learning to make Chinese food with our teacher Jessie and were both surprised with just how easy she made it all seem! I cant wait to try making these in my own kitchen, and then sharing them with you.  Here’s a look at what went on in the Hipcooks kitchen… The menu: Steamed shrimp wontons Chicken cabbage dumplings Chinese-style green beans Seared sesame beef in rice paper Lotus Flower Pork Puff Pastry Sweet Wontons with orange, walnuts and dates We also enjoyed 4 types of Chinese tea, seared scallop lo mein and even scallion pancakes! Stay tuned for video of me attempting my very first pan flip while making those really delicious scallion pancakes. If you’re looking to hone in on your Chinese culinary skills, check out Hipcooks . Can’t wait for my next class!

Local Food Citizen: Common Good City Farm in Washington, DC

21 April 2010

Before we go one word further, I have a request:  Prepare to think differently about Washington, DC.  Too often our capital city is disparaged for bulky national programs.  But this is a story about something that works beautifully:  Common Good City Farm located at 3rd and V Streets in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. Continued below The Community Comes Out for Common Good Founded four years ago by Liz Falk and other engaged citizens, Common Good recently celebrated the start of the 2010 season.  It’s located on the grounds of a former junior high that ended in a sweep of school closings by Mayor Fenty in 2008.  Of the twenty-six schools that closed, Common Good is the only active space among the vacancies formed two years ago.  The city has plans to create a public park in the area surrounding the farm, so there will be gateway green for people to relax and then discover it

Garden Design Update: A Guest Post From the Garden Fairies

20 April 2010

A guest post by the garden fairies… We garden fairies are in a real tither here at May Dreams Gardens. You would not even believe what is going on around here! First of all the other morning, on Saturday, one of our very own, Columbine Goblinfly, was sleeping off an early spring party, all nestled deep within a tall sedum, when “WHACK”, a big old shovel blade came down and nearly took off

all that is required is to slow down and reflect

19 April 2010

I spend a lot of time alone. I read the art reviews, the concert reviews and the movie reviews in the Toronto Globe and Mail and realize how isolated I am. (Manitoulin does not have a movie theatre) “Ned” I say.

“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.”

17 April 2010

Benjamin Franklin As I’ve mentioned on various occasions, I’m a senior at NYU. My first year I lived on 3rd Ave and 11th Street, my second year on Union Square West and 16th Street, my third year (for fall semester, I went abroad to Madrid in the Spring) I lived on Lafayette and Walker St in Chinatown and this year I find myself back in the East Village again, living right near Astor Place

Its Been A Long Week

17 April 2010

This week was a write-off activity wise, I’ve not gone to the gym, Taekwon-Do, for a run or even a walk this week.  My cold kinda knocked me on my ass for a few days.  I finally had to take a sick day on Tuesday, as I didn’t have a voice by the end of the work day Monday.  I am feeling better but I’m still tired, instead of wearing myself down further I’m giving my body time to get better.

two new panels

16 April 2010

Translating the painted designs into full sized 90 inch cloth pieces is a little daunting but a start was made yesterday at the regular Thursday sewing circle. Three different women over the course of the day worked on the blue dotted eyelet stitches pictured left.
